Advanced Motivational Interviewing for Correctional Practice

Building on existing MI skills to improve case management and the working relationship

Motivational interviewing is widely regarded as an essential skill set for Practitioners of behaviour change. To get good at a skill, thoughtful practice is required.

Practitioners have a role in mediating/facilitating the expectations of the Court/Parole Board with the person who has offended (Service User). Having expectations of behaviour change imposed will likely generate resistance to change and discord in the working relationship. Therefore, drawing upon Motivational Interviewing skills to manage these tensions is a central skill set for case management, particularly for Practitioners who engage with Service Users who exhibit more complex and high-risk behaviour.

In this advanced course, we will build upon your earlier learning in MI with the intention of extending and stretching your existing skills.

The Advanced MI Practice course is divided into three parts:

Part 1 covers an overview of MI in Correctional practice, the spirit of MI, a quiz to test your current knowledge and the Four Tasks of MI framework.

Part 2 further unpacks the Four Tasks of MI and provides a guide to how these can be applied in case management.

Part 3 will focus on managing discord in the working relationship, remote delivery of case management, your next steps in your MI journey and a final knowledge check.

To get the most from this eLearn we suggest the following:

  • Set aside regular time to explore the material.
  • Create an opportunity to discuss the ideas with your colleagues at the end of each section. You can create your own learning community.
  • Take your learning to a supervisor and explore potential areas of stretch. This will allow you to build upon your current MI skills.

See below for the full course breakdown. This eLearn takes an estimated 8 hours to complete. It includes reading material, a PDF journal, videos, exercises, and quizzes.
